You can forget the final score and still remember the game that earned your player a starting spot.
You remember the breakthrough. The stretch when nothing fell. The season you stayed because you wanted to finish what you started.
Those are the moments we want Draft Companion to give room to grow. Basketball games already give us the action. A career becomes personal when that action has somewhere to go.
Draft Companion is a basketball career companion built around NBA 2K MyNBA Player Lock. You play your games, bring your results into the app, and use that performance to develop a player whose career extends beyond the scoreboard. From early recruiting to life in the pros, the ambition is simple: make the next game matter because of everything that came before it.
This is our product journal for Draft Companion Version 9.6, and the reason we believe this project deserves to keep growing.
The featured dashboard and other screenshots show earlier app versions; the Version 9.6 interface may differ.
The space between games is worth caring about
If you have ever built a player in MyNBA and made your own rules for improving them, you already understand the appeal.
You want freedom, but you also want a reason to earn the next upgrade. You want to tell your own story, but it helps when the world gives you something to react to. Keeping all of that in a spreadsheet or in your head can become another job before you get back to playing.
Draft Companion gives that personal career a structure.
Record or import a box score. Earn performance-based XP. Decide where your player needs to improve. Return to the court with a goal that belongs to this career.
The satisfying part is the decision. Do you strengthen what already makes your player dangerous, or spend your progress addressing the weakness that keeps showing up? An upgrade means more when you can connect it to the games you played to earn it.
Progress becomes a choice: the Development Center puts the proposed improvement beside its cost.
Draft Companion tracks its own progression. In a companion setup, you carry the relevant changes into your editable NBA 2K player yourself. It does not automatically sync upgrades to a console save or replace the progression rules inside NBA 2K’s MyCAREER mode.
A beginning that makes the destination mean something
A professional debut carries a different weight when you remember being an unranked prospect.
Draft Companion’s career paths cover high school, college, and the NBA, with access depending on your selected mode and plan. That gives players room to choose the kind of basketball story they want to spend time with.
For someone who loves the long climb, recruiting gives the early games a purpose. College brings another stage of the journey, including draft ambitions and in-game NIL opportunities. The professional career shifts the focus toward a place in the rotation, contracts, and the legacy you want to build.
You do not have to want every chapter. The point is having room for the chapter you care about.
A player who wants the earliest beginnings and a player who wants to get straight to professional basketball should both be able to recognize their idea of a career here.
Before the big contract, there is a player trying to get noticed. This separate example career shows the recruiting side of the journey.
Your player gets a voice
A stat line tells us what happened on the court. It leaves a lot unsaid.
How does your player handle praise? What do they say when a reporter asks about the team? How much are they willing to risk to speak their mind?
Draft Companion’s press conferences let you choose a response or write an answer in your own words. Responses can affect career metrics such as team chemistry and fan support, and saved statements can become material for later callbacks.
That connection is what makes the feature worth building. A line of dialogue has more weight when it can become part of your player’s history.
In the screenshot below, the same strong performance leads to several possible public reactions. The choice asks you to think about who your player is becoming, even after the scoring is done.
The interview continues the game’s story. Choose an answer or give your player your own words.
Where Draft Companion fits among the alternatives
Basketball players already have good reasons to choose different experiences. NBA 2K offers a dedicated MyCAREER mode, while MyNBA centers on running and shaping a franchise. Those are established parts of its own offering, as described in 2K’s official game-mode guide.
Draft Companion serves a particular player within that landscape: someone who wants to play a personal career inside the flexibility of MyNBA Player Lock, with a separate system for earning growth and building the life around it.
Compared with a self-managed spreadsheet, its value is having progression and career decisions together in a purpose-built experience. Compared with using MyNBA Player Lock on its own, it adds a dedicated layer of personal development and off-court choices. For someone happy with MyCAREER’s own structure, that extra companion may be unnecessary.
Our difference is the combination: the games you choose to play, an earned progression loop, and a career that gives those results personal context. We are building for people who enjoy that combination enough to make it part of their routine.
What that changes for the people using it
For our players, the benefit should be felt during an ordinary evening of basketball.
You finish a game and have a reason to look at the result beyond whether you won. You can work toward a particular improvement. You can return to a career with an unresolved ambition, whether that is getting noticed, earning a bigger role, or deciding how your player handles the attention.
For the player who enjoys role-playing, those decisions provide material for a character. For someone recording a career series, recruiting and post-game reactions create moments to discuss between highlights. For the person who already keeps a personal progression spreadsheet, the app gives that habit a home.
These are the outcomes we design for. The app is worth using when it makes your own basketball sessions more meaningful, and when the time you spend managing the career adds to the enjoyment.
Why we keep building
The most valuable improvement is not always another feature. Sometimes it is a clearer upgrade screen. Sometimes it is making a consequence easier to understand, or helping the next conversation reflect something the player already said.
Those details are worth developing because they protect the connection between effort and outcome. When you understand why your player improved, you can plan. When a choice has a legible consequence, you can own it. When the career carries something forward, you have a reason to care about what happens next.
That is the standard we want Draft Companion to meet as it grows: every addition should help you understand your career, shape it, or remember it.
The best reason to open the app again should be unfinished basketball business. A place in the starting lineup. A school you want to impress. A player you are still figuring out.
Start your career with Draft Companion and give your next game something to build on.
Draft Companion is an independent companion project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by 2K or the NBA. Career features and access vary by mode and plan.
